Barbara Shwom directs the Writing Place,
Northwestern's peer tutoring center in writing, in addition
to teaching writing courses in the Writing Program,
the McCormick School, and Kellogg. A nationally recognized
leader in business communication, Shwom has served as
president of both the Association for Business Communication
and the Association of Professional Communication Consultants.
She is the managing principal of the consulting firm
Communication
Partners and is a frequent presenter at conventions
in communication, education, and peer tutoring. Her
research interests include leadership communication,
visual communication of data, and teaching research
writing; she is currently coauthoring a book titled
Graphic and Visual Communication for Managers.
Recent papers and publications include "Enriching
Freshman Design Through Collaboration with Professional
Designers" (with P. Hirsch, J. Anderson, E. Colgate,
and C. Yarnoff), which won the 2002 Best Paper Award
from the Freshman Division of the American Society of
Engineering Education, and "A Response to Edward
R. Tufte's The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint,"
presented at the Association for Business Communication
European Conference in Milan, May 2004.
Before earning an M.A. and Ph.D. in English
at Northwestern, Shwom received a B.A. in English and
Philosophy from Simmons College in Boston. At Northwestern,
she has been recognized for teaching excellence by being
named a Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished
Lecturer.
