Charles Yarnoff has been on the Writing Program faculty since 1979. He teaches intermediate and advanced composition; engineering design and communication; and utopian literature.  As a faculty member in Northwestern's School of Continuing Studies (SCS) since 1974, he has taught creative writing and a wide variety of courses on American literature.

He was named a Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished Lecturer for 2009-2010, an award recognizing faculty members who “have consistently demonstrated outstanding performance in classroom teaching.”  He has been voted to the ASG faculty honor roll twice and has received the SCS Distinguished Teaching Award.

Yarnoff has been a Weinberg freshman advisor since 2000, and is the academic director of the Summer Academic Workshop, a pre-orientation writing seminar for freshmen.  He is co-chair of the Writing Program’s Freshman Seminar Committee, which provides a wide array of teaching resources to freshman seminar faculty through quarterly meetings and through NuWrite, Northwestern’s online writing community.

Yarnoff is a member of the University Fellowships Committee, and on the board of trustees for the Students Publishing Company, which oversees the Daily Northwestern and the Northwestern yearbook.

He is lead writer of Engineering Design and Communication, the textbook used in the required freshman course of that name taught in the McCormick School of Engineering.
