James O'Laughlin Associate Professor of Instruction, The Cook Family Writing Program

James O’Laughlin received the Distinguished Teaching Award from Northwestern’s School of Continuing Studies (now the School of Professional Studies) in 1999-2000, and in 2005 he was named to the Associated Student Government (ASG) Faculty Honor Roll. In addition to being a full-time Weinberg College Adviser, he has taught a wide range of courses as a faculty member in the Cook Family Writing Program and the School of Professional Studies. These have included first-year seminars on Modern Irish Literature and American Indian Literature, Reading and Writing Fiction, Literary Editing, Reading and Writing Creative Nonfiction, Modes of Writing, Intermediate Composition, and Engineering Design and Communication. He was a fiction editor at StoryQuarterly from 1998 until 2007 (and Co-Editor in 2004), has written reviews of fiction, biography, and philosophy for Booklist, and is at work on a book on writing.
